"alas, who is there to take up the brush where he left off with the [Maine legend]."

John Marin, in a letter to Alfred Stieglitz about Hartley's death in 1943

Pencil. Pen. Charcoal. Images captured by frame and shutter. Light and line converge on a page; an expanse of paper. And a masterwork is born. At historic Bates College in Lewiston, one of the region's most impressive collections of masterworks on paper graces the halls of its Museum of Art.

Featuring prints, drawings, photographs and paintings, this collection has as its centerpiece a body of work and memorabilia created by Lewiston's most famous artistic son, Marsden Hartley.

In addition, the Museum showcases exhibitions of contemporary art in its upper gallery, and serves as a major learning resource to Bates College as well as the region at large.
